For anyone who has never attended a pie auction, it is something you should add to your bucket list. More specifically, anyone who has never attended the ESTANCIA PIE AUCTION should put THAT event on their bucket list. I don’t know how many “auctions” can boast of using an actual “auctioneer”, but apparently the President of the Estancia School Board, Randall Ryley, has some experience in that area. Serving as the auctioneer’s bid assistant was Estancia’s own Milton Harbert, the FFA Instructor for Estancia High School.

The event commenced with some tasty down-home vittles, a la carte. While stomachs were filled, potential bidders had limited time to scrutinize the available baked goods. Cakes, pies, brownies, and even red Chile adorned the lobby at the Estancia High School gym lobby. One cake called attention to itself with a photo memorializing the loss of two beloved members of the community, Danny and Delma Prather.

Three cakes appearing professional in design highlighted the skill and talent cultivated at Estancia High School. Will Trinity Lucero, the creator of those three professional looking cakes, remember the efforts made by her family, teachers, and community when she one day appears on “Nailed It”? Judging by the success of the fundraiser, they nailed it.

The Auction

Imagine. Each Future Farmers of America (“FFA”) student walked their pie to within view of the audience, as if leading a show lamb in the arena. The auctioneer streamed sparsely intelligible chants, interrupted by startling loud quips he shouted in acknowledgement of bids Mr. Harbert captured with a single finger. The magnificent show captivated bidders whose faces of amusement turned to concern. As fewer and fewer pies remained, bidders could be observed remarking amongst themselves about the dwindling prospect of taking home an edible.

Sitting in the crowd one became caught up in emotion as pies bid for higher and higher amounts than their previous delectable. By night’s end, 52 pies were sold to 40 different bidders for a total haul of over $20,000.

An outsider looking in might wonder why we pay an average $400 per pie for such an event. For parents and teachers, the answer is easy; “the future.” To the cynic, I point to “results”. Behold, the NM FFA State Career Development Events results for Estancia FFA:
